When we began to prepare for the final issue of Great
Golf Magazine for 2012, we wanted to do a story
on Suneagles Golf Club and its history mainly
because it is a
Tillinghast design, which for a long time was
only open to military members, veterans, and their families.
With the recent closure of Fort Monmouth, the golf course
was opened to the public and is now managed my
Atlantic
Golf Management under the direction of Chris
Wegner, PGA
Pro, who was formerly at the
Architects Golf Club in
Lopatcong, NJ. Mike Moretti, Director of Communications for the New Jersey
State Golf
Association, wrote a wonderful piece on Suneagles in NJSGA
GOLF, touching a bit on its history but mostly on its future, which, with his
permission, we present to you. In keeping with the theme, we decided to run a
piece, written by the Editor of Golf Illustrated 1931, on a new golf course
opening, Monmouth County Country Club, which has since been renamed
Suneagles Golf Club.
We thought you might find it very interesting to get a
prospective of how golf was solely for the “1 percenters” in the early 1900’
s
in comparison to how golf now reaches the millions of golfers of all incomes
and backgrounds today
. We also included an editorial, written by the famous
golf course designer
, A.W. Tillinghast, who provides you with his opinion on
judging courses by low scores which we feel you will thoroughly enjoy
reading.
So, Great Golf Magazine 2012 Issue 3 takes you back in time to
November 1931with a replica cover of Golf Illustrated and articles and photos
reprinted from that very issue. Have a great winter and we’ll see you again in
Spring 2013.
Keep up with the gr oup in front of you!

When it was acquired in 1942 following
the Depression for a mere $42,000 by the
U.S. Army, play was restricted to of ficers
only. Eventually, it was opened to all
military personnel, including veterans. In
the middle of the past decade, and with
the closing of Fort Monmouth
impending, public golfers were allowed
to play, although at an escalated rate of
$75 per round.
In September 201 1, The Fort
Monmouth Economic Revitalization
Authority (FMERA) announced that
Atlantic Golf Management, Inc., of
Farmingdale, had submitted the winning
bid to lease Suneagles and its restaurant
and banquet facilities for a period of one
year.
This year, FMERA will
entertain bids to sell the 6,357-yard
Suneagles layout and its properties,
totaling 188 acres, to a private buyer
.
Currently, the Army maintains ownership
and leases the property to FMERA.
“We will be an aggressive
bidder to take over Suneagles on a full-
time basis,” said S teven Rice, CEO of
Atlantic Management. “W e believe it has
tremendous upside, not only for its
continuous membership, but also to
foster an environment for the public
patrons.”
“This magnificent layout was
pretty much private and the public
hasn't’really had a chance to play a great
course like this. We think it could be
attractive to a broad spectrum of golfers,
especially with some local courses, like
Bamm Hollow, closing,” Rice continued.
“When you factor in Gibbs Hall,
which can host up to 500 people, and a
sports bar on the premises, it makes
Suneagles an exceptional venue.”
Impressively, Suneagles is more
or less the same challenging golf course
that Tillinghast developed more than 85
One of the state’s rare
golf course treasures,
The Suneagles Golf
Club at Fort Monmouth in
Eatontown, is ready for a new
and appreciative audience - the
public links golfer.
The closing of Fort Monmouth in
Tinton Falls, as an active military base, has
resulted in the course being available to
golfers of all stripes. So after many years,
Suneagles is now open to the public links
golfer and at rates no higher than $39 on
weekends and $33 Monday through Friday
.
This A.W . Tillinghast-designed
layout, opened in 1926, has hosted the likes
of Babe Ruth, San Snead, U.S Open
champion Orville Moody , two-time PGA
champion Vic Ghezzi, and legendary Gene
Sarazen, who set the course record of 65 in
1935. That same year, Byron Nelson, then
head pro of the Ridgewood Country Club,
won his first pro event, the New Jersey S
tate
Open, at Suneagles, then known as the
Monmouth County Country Club (see pages
12-13).
Tillinghast, the famed American-
born golf course designer , is responsible for
35 courses in New Jersey and such famed
tracks as Baltusrol, Ridgewood, Pine Valley,
Somerset Hills, Winged Foot and Bethpage
Black.
When the course opened in 1926
and through 1942, it was a private facility

years ago. An aerial view of the
course from 1931, which hangs
on the premises, is almost
indistinguishable from the same
photo today. Only one bunker ,
the famed “Sahara bunker” in the
middle of the 15th fairway , has
been removed. Otherwise,
Tillinghast's fingerprints are all
over the place. There are deep
bunkers, up to eight feet high,
alongside the narrow , undulating
greens and in many fairways.
Each hole challenges the golfer's
course management skills, some
with hidden approaches, others
with tiered greens.
“All 18 holes are
dramatically different,” says head
pro Chris Wegner, who was the
head pro at The Architects Golf
Club in Lopatcong the past three
years. “This course has all the
original templates. The layout
and bones of the golf course are
phenomenal. The ultimate goal is to bring it
back to its original splendor in 1926.
When
you come here, you'll know you are
playing a classic course.”
Other than the usual tree
trimming, reseeding, and resodding the
sides of some bunkers, Suneagles is ready
to go. A five-year plan would implement
the leveling of tee boxes and replacement
of the original terra cotta drainage system,
which is still 60 percent intact throughout
the course.
“We have been getting a lot of
play due to the mild winter and gotten good
feedback on the playability of the greens.
We expect upwards of 30,000 rounds this
summer,” Wegner said.
Full membership at Suneagles
remains at $2,300 for unlimited golf with
other affordable memberships for former
military personnel also available.
Restauranteur Tim McLoone is
managing his eighth dining establishment,
Joe’s Sports Bar and Grille, facing the 10th
hole of Suneagles. It is named after his
father, Joe, and offers all entrees under $15.
Last year, Atlantic Golf
Management took over the lease of the
Spring Meadow Golf Course in
Farmingdale from the S tate of New Jersey
and under the tutelage of Atlantic VP ,
Harry Leonard, has spent extensive man
hours in improving the physical aspects of
the course.
Its hard work has paid of f with
rounds played up 7 percent up to 27,700
rounds. A jump to more than 30,000 rounds
is expected for 2012. At the same time,
Atlantic Management has kept the cost of
play at $33 weekdays and $38 weekends
and just $20 for seniors Monday through
Friday.

the New Jersey State Golf Association.

At Eatontown, near Red Bank, New
Jersey , on the famous Shrewsbury
River, and not far from the Rumson
Club, lies the Monmouth County Country
Club. Like most country clubs, golf is
naturally the foremost club activity and, as
the Monmouth County course was designed
and constructed under the supervision of Mr
.
A, W. Tillinghast, internationally known as
one of the foremost golf course architects of
the day , its members have one of the best
designed courses in the district, laid out over
gently
undulating
country in the
Monmouth
County pine
belt. The
course from
the
championship
tees can be
stretched to
over 6,600
yards and
contains
many
noteworthy
holes; the
short holes,
which are so
much the test
of any first-
class course
are
particularly
good and varied, while the second index of a
good course, the two-shot holes, are
extremely good and call for unusual diversity
of play .
Added to good design are
uniformly good greens and a well-considered
system of bunkering which places most of
the trouble conveniently handy for the good
player who misplays his shots, leaving the
ordinary man, who just plays at the game, a
chance to get away from the tees without
facing carries which to him are impossible.
The greens are well bunkered and interesting
in varied and undulation contour
. So well
designed is the course that par has been but
seldom broken and only once by an amateur
golfer— Mr
. T. Philip Perkins holds that
record with a fine score of 70.
With a stream
lined with for get-me-nots running through
the course and three fine water holes, of
which good use has been made, the
Monmouth County Country Club is an asset
to the sporting region in which it lies.
Possessed of a charmingly designed
and appointed clubhouse, its fortunate
members may stay at the club. No more
delightful
place could
be available
for a golfer
,
as they look
out over the
course and
the glorious
country
beyond
through the
ample
casement
windows.
The
clubhouse is
Tudor in
character
and was
designed by
Mr. B.
Hustace
Simonson,
known for
the design of many of the finest examples in
the United S tates of the architecture of this
period. Monmouth County has one of the
handsomest and best appointed clubhouses in
the Metropolitan District.
In a country famous for its horses
and its horse shows, the club is interested in
two of the sports of which that noble animal
is no small a part—hunting and polo, both of
which enjoy a busy season and, of course,
there is fine riding throughout the county
.
There are the usual tennis courts for the
strenuous exponents of that game,
trapshooting, and the best of trout fishing on

streams right on the nearby property of the
club. Being at a shore resort, the exclusive
Beach Club is available for the members,
besides its own lar
ge outdoor pool. Nor need
they desert in
winter , as all the
usual winter
sports are
available in its
woods, on its
hills, and over
its lakes;
besides, the
famous
Shrewsbury
River is one of
the famous
spots of
America for
such sports, in
particular that
of ice-boating,
for which its
broad expanse
is well-fitted
and whereon the most famous ice-boat races
in America are always run regularly every
winter .
Monmouth
County , with
such numerous
activities
available, is a
year-round all
sport club as
complete as
anything in the
East and leaves
its fortunate
members little
excuse for not
getting the
proper outdoor
exercise all
year long.
Within a one-
hour run of that
city with
express service, Monmouth County is a
convenient club for its New
York
membership and its out-of- town members
can put up there in the height of solid
comfort, running in and out to New
York for
their business and yet remaining in the quiet
and peaceful atmosphere of a country estate
with all the club activities at hand during
leisure hours.
To be thoroughly up-to-date in
every respect
the club has a
first-class
landing field
for planes
whereat last
year over two
hundred
landings were
made by
golfers coming
there tor play
.
A fine natural
site was
available near
the polo fields,
which was put
in shape for the
benefit of the
flying
members of the
club and any other golfers who wished to use
this modern method of travel in going to and
from their golf, incidentally saving much
time and
avoiding on
week-ends the
gentle Sunday
drive.
A great
many of the
finest clubs
these days have
their landing

Monmouth
County has,
and those
which have no
such
convenience
are behind the
times. All in all,
the Monmouth

, both in its
own facilities for sport and its propinquity to
everything which it does not in itself possess,
for a wide range of interests.

GPS GOLF WATCH
EXPRESSO WR62
For years, slow play has been one of
the biggest complaints among
golfers and one of the reasons for
the continual decline in the sport’s
participation level. More and more golf
professionals are being put on the clock
more, in my opinion, as an example to the
golf enthusiasts viewing the event rather
than for the actual slow play (or lack of)
the professionals are causing the
tournament. You know there’s a bit of
pressure on the professional tour officials
when they put a player on the clock
during a semi-finals round in a match play
event as they did this year on Morgan
Pressel at the Sybase Match Play
Championship when there were virtually
no players behind her group and she really
wasn’t holding anyone up. A large
numbers of offenders I find are among the
recreational golfers who play every shot
as if they are Tiger Woods or are playing
for their next paycheck or just don’t know
proper golf etiquette.
The answer to slow play was to
permit the usage of distance measuring
devices. They come in all forms from
programs for your smart phones to dtand
alone devices. Some of the devices take
more time to figure out the distances than
they were meant to which sometimes
causes even slower play. Up until Garmin
came out with the first GPS wrist watch,
the range finder was the best tool for
determining distances to the flagstick or
hazard. A quick shoot to the target with
the device and you were ready to select
your club and hit your shot. The Garmin
Approach S1 only provides distances to
the front, middle , and back of the green
from anywhere on the hole, even if you
spray your shot onto the fairway of
another hole. There is definitely time
saved with both a range finder and a GPS
watch for determining your distance.
Recently, Garmin came out with
an upgraded GPS watch, the Approach S3,
which, unlike the Approach S1, provides
distances to doglegs
and layups at a
retail cost of $350,
$100 more than the
Approach S1for this
additional feature.
While the Expresso
WR62 has distances
to the middle of key
bunkers and hazards
built in, this is a
feature you will not find to be that useful
as it provides readings only to the nearest
bunkers and hazards
which often will not
come into play. I
spoke with a
company
representative who
informed me that
there is so much
information that
you can build into
the watch’s
software in addition to the 25,000
thousand pre-loaded golf courses the
watch contains (the Garmin S1 contains
17,500 pre-loaded courses). The reason
why a product like SkyCaddie can provide
you with detailed information on bunkers
and hazards is because it requires you to

load each individual course prior to
playing and can only contain a maximum
number of golf courses. Therefore, a GPS
watch would not have enough memory to
provide both thousands of pre-loaded golf
courses as well as bunker and hazard
information.
For the most part, as a GPS
watch, the Garmin S1 and the Expresso
WR62 pretty much perform the same
functions. However, the Expresso WR62
takes it a few steps beyond being a GPS
golf watch. The WR62 is a more stylish
watch that you can use for everyday wear.
It also has a stop watch, a timer, and an
alarm.
I’ve been using the Garmin
Approach S1 for the past 18 months and,
overall, have been very pleased with its
performance. My only complaints have
been the battery
life and loss
signals. The
Garmin’s battery
life (while in GPS
mode) is closer to
6 hours than the 8
hours they claim,
which for the most
part is not a problem but I have to be sure
to activate it on the first tee and shut off
the GPS as soon as I complete my round
if I want to continue to use the watch
feature until I have time to swap it out for
my regular wristwatch. The battery life on
the Expresso WR62 is far better than the
Garmin so much that I have worn the
watch for a total of 12 hours having
played a 4 1/2 round of golf without the
battery running out. Additionally, with a
20 channel receiver, the Garmin has a
tendency to lose the satellite signal which
requires you to restart the watch. The
Expresso WR62 has a 62 channel receiver
and I have yet to lose a satellite signal.
These two features alone, in addition to
the pricetag of $180 for the Expresso
WR62 vs. $250 for the Garmin S1 could
be deal breaker between the two watches.
You can purchase the Expresso
WR62 at Golfsmith.com and the Garmin
at GolfGalaxy.com.
SUNGLASSES FOLLOW-UP
SUNDOG EYEWEAR
In our last issue, I tested the
Sundog Laser Mela-Lens Photochromic
sunglasses and became convinced that
these are the best sunglasses on the market.
I especially liked the Photochromic
adaptation where the lens tint changes with
light conditions.
Hazy sun in summer are often the
standard conditions for playing golf in the
Northeast which lead me the think that
perhaps a polarized lens would make it
easier to
see the
golf ball
in the air .
Sundog
sent me a
pair of the Mela-Lens Polarized
Photochromic Plus sunglasses and I haven’
t
played with anything else since. Not only
do the lenses lighten and darken with the
weather conditions, but glares are
practically eliminated while the thick
frames block out any light that creeps in on
the sides on your face. I challenge anyone
to find me a better pair of golfing
sunglasses. Did I mention they are also
perfect for fishing? You can purchase your
pair of Sundog sunglasses at

I n the tradition of Royal L ytham and other famous seaside courses in the British Isles,
Twisted Dune is a first class links. Laid out through rolling sand dunes and almost devoid
of trees, it’ s easy to forget you are just minutes away from
Atlantic City and not tucked away
deep in the Scottish Highlands. Tee times are further ap art than at traditional clubs and play is
limited to insure each foursome rarely ever sees the group in front or behind them.
A public

Just why the fact that one or several players
succeeded in getting around any course in the
60's in the major championships, should be
regarded as a reflection on the demands of the
course, is dif ficult for me to appreciate. But,
undoubtedly , there are many who regard such
performances as calamities.
These are confined to
the members of the club, whose course has been
thus humiliated (as they think) and more
particularly the members of the green committees
who have groomed their courses for the big shows
of golf. Such reaction to inspired, sub-par scoring
is foolish. There is no course in the world that will
prevent the right player from breaking 70 if it is
his day to get all the breaks of the game.
The comparison of scores over various
courses through successive
years may be indicative of
the merits of the holes as
judged by their measure to
true championship test, and
then again it may not.
Weather conditions are the
chief factor in throwing out
of gear any system of
calculating comparative
scores as a basis of
comparative merit.
Then,
too, it is not beyond the
bounds of imagination to conceive of a collection
of holes that contains enough bad ones as to
discount the excellence of play; freakish holes that
stubbornly resist the best of shots and turn them to
disaster . And this thought rather suggests the
observation that high scoring is not always proof
that a course may be altogether an admirable test
of fine shots, neither does a score (or scores) in
the 60's by any means indicate that the holes,
individually and collectively
, are wanting in
testing qualities. Indeed, I am inclined to believe
that a very fine shot-maker in a scoring mood will
be more likely to make a very low score over a
very exacting course, where contours of fairway
and greens adequately reward and punish, than
over an easier route where greens may not be
trusted to hold courageous play at all times.
However , it is a fair assumption that the summary
of scores which reveals figures in the 60's as a not
uncommon round among the leaders, represents
play over a rather ordinary lay-out. So, after all, it
may be said truly that under normal conditions we
do not like to see too many cards turned in that
show that par has been bettered by four or five
strokes. We do not express our admiration of the
few at all grudgingly
, but if the consistent beating
of par seems to be getting a habit with the field,
we surely turn our thoughts to the strengthening
of our defenses.
My own observations in checking the
play over such courses of mine as have been the
scenes of National and Sectional championships,
have made me firmly convinced that the character
of the one-shot or
, par 3 holes has more to do in
the assaults of the 70
breakers than any other
factor . For example, let us
assume that a certain course
possesses the usual number
of one-shot holes,—four or
perhaps only three. If these
four one-shotters are
mediocre or so wide open
as to make the shot from
the tee a not particularly
testing ef fort, and probably
providing no great
punishment if the green is not gained or held,—
these easy par 3 holes only seem to be great
opportunities for the cracks to record birdie 2's,
and they look for probable 3's by reason of deadly
chip shots or pitches, even though the green has
been missed entirely
. Such holes may be
scenically beautiful and inspiring enough
ordinarily , but if they do not show teeth which
will bite and hurt they are rather held in contempt
by the cracks in the classics, and shots, even from
the tournament teeing grounds, that are not
exacting enough to make it necessary to take un-
usual pains are unworthy
. The short holes on
championship courses should be the most feared
of any , and any player who cracks 70 should face
fear and conquer it if his performance is to be
rated a truly great one. I recall that Bobby Jones,
during the practice

Judging Courses by Low Scores
(Continued from page 19)
rounds at Winged Foot prior to the Open Championship there, asserted that he would be well
satisfied to score par each time on the one- shotters of this course. As a matter of fact birdies on
the four short holes at Winged Foot during that Open were comparatively few and 4's were
plentiful, simply because these holes were commanding of respect. As I recall 70 was broken
there by only one man, Jones. I have a score card which I have kept since the 23rd of July, 1897.
It records a round made by Willie Auchterlonie over the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, on
that date:
Out 4 5 4 3 3 5 4 4 4 - 36.
In 4 5 4 3 3 5 4 4 4 - 35 - 71.
Although I visited St. Andrews on numerous occasions after that date, and until the rubber cored
ball came into play in 1901, I do not recall a better score there with the old gutta percha ball,
which, as all old-timers can tell you, took a lot of hitting, Certainly this performance today with
modern balls and clubs would rate with the 65's and 66's, for the par at St. Andrews in those days
was 76. This round of Auchterlonie's beat the best previous rounds of 72, made by Andrew
Kirkaldy in 1895 and by that great amateur, Fred Tait, in 1894. These rounds, breaking par by
four and five strokes, would score in the 60's today as stated before, but I never heard anyone
suggest that the classic green of Old St.Andrews was a “push-over” and gone to the bow-wows
generally, simply because several of the world’s best golfers happened to be in a scoring mood on
days when they got the breaks. At that they might have done better, for on the home hole Tait took
a 4, Kirkaldy a 5, and Auchterlonie a 4, which was par. This hole hole measured 375 or 380 yards
as I recall it, and on one occasion it was over-driven by that mighty hitter, Blackwell, and he did it
with a “gutty” ball.
To avoid the imagined disgrace of having 70 broken in the tournaments, the committees
sometimes (only too frequently as a matter of fact) cut the holes on the greens in hazardous and
tricky parts. A good course certainly requires no such treatment. However, there is meat enough in
this for a subsequent article. The real thought of this one may be summed up in the remark that
any great course will npow andthen take a good beating from good men, and there is nothing that
can be done fairly to stop it, nor any reason why there should.
